9 Kinds of People You Don’t Want As Neighbours in an Aircraft

When you are inside a pressurized metal container, flying 30,000 feet in the air you would ideally want a stress-free environment. If the already cramped leg-space and claustrophobia inducing loos weren’t enough, you have these nine gems to ruin your flight experience, if you happen to sit next to one.

1. The Spread
He’s a spread, but definitely not the smoothest one in the market. This one loves to spread out as large as possible and occupy as much area, even the part he hasn’t paid for, as he can. God be with you if you are sitting at the window and the middle seat is hosting a Spread.

2. The Newly-Married Honeymooning Couple
Talk about kebab mein haddi, only it’s your Kebab and they are the haddis. And it is exactly as annoying as the way it sounds. They will make you feel you are invading private space, even though your seat is legitimately yours. The tinkling of the wedding jewellery, which the bride has adorned in copious amounts, the coo-chi-cooing... you’ll be especially unfortunate if you spot some PDA in your peripheral vision.

3. The Human Snorlax
Yes, you’re absolutely allowed to sleep in the aircraft, but if your neighbour is a Snorlax, you’re bound to be annoyed. This one starts the nap time as soon as he seats himself and after that, his vocabulary consists of only one sound - *snore*. “Could you please move your head to the other side?” *snore*. “Please let me pass.” *snore*. “Would you like some coffee?” *snore* *snore* *snore*

4. The Returning College Stud
He’s been away from parental supervision for the first time for so long. He probably has piercings and grizzly manes of hair and beard. Speaks in a fake accent and is so full of himself that he can barely contain it. Poor you is flooded with stories of college debauchery and self-proclaimed heroism. And oh, did he mention his bike, the one that flies faster than this aircraft?

5. The Wannabe Model
She will always be surrounded by a cloud of perfumes and powders, lest the papparazi strike, you know. She will make you feel underdressed and the same time, relieved that you’re not the one caked in compact and chained in brands. And you’re in for some accented verbal abuse if you happen to accidentally touch her Gucci bag or Prada shoes or whatever.

6. The Frequent Loo User
He will use the loo about ten times in a two-hour flight. He is constantly excusing himself, climbing over you to get to the loo. And just when you think he has finally expunged his bladders and guts, he needs to go again. The washroom sign is forever occupied because of him. You start to wonder why he bothers coming back to his seat at all. Oh, of course, to annoy you!

7. The Luggage Fretter
The Loo User must have learned it from the master, for this one is forever checking the overhead luggage to ensure his hasn’t been stolen. Seriously? Luggage stolen in an aircraft? But no, he is paranoid enough for both of you. He also needs something in the likes of headphones, tablets, tissues, moisturizer and so on from his bag, every five minutes.

8. The Gossip Girls
It’s okay to gossip, we all do it, there’s nothing to be ashamed of. Only, it is acceptable in closed quarters. You don’t want to find yourself privy to the scandalous lives of some aunty or the lecherous habits of the old man you’ll never have to meet (thankfully). These chatterboxes also don’t seem to have volume control and will continuously give you mini heart attacks with every peal of shrill laughter.

9. The Curious Aunty
The most annoying aircraft neighbour ever. You’re travelling alone; she’s travelling alone, voila! You’re now the best of friends. She will ask you questions with the authority of a visa interviewer. She might also want to stuff he ghar ka khana down your throat. And then ask for compliments on her cooking. Sorry auntieji, this one’s not for you.

50 Questions: Fifty Shades of Grey

I do not enjoy pain. Obviously, I hated the book. But it did cause me to ask these questions, in no particular order:

  1. How many times was the word "flush" used in the book?
  2. Why does Anastasia "blush" and "flush" so much?
  3. How is it possible that at twenty one years of age, she didn't have a single relationship?
  4. How did Christian become so wealthy?
  5. How can anyone be sexually attracted to another person on the first meeting?
  6. Why is Ana always scared?
  7. Why is Ana always whimpering?
  8. Why is Ana so helpless?
  9. Why doesn't Ana not protest even after realizing that Christian is using sex as a weapon to blur her senses?
  10. Why is it that she had to be a virgin?
  11. What purpose does her alcohol intolerance serve?
  12. Why would Ana's reading of many British classics cause her to set high standards for potential boyfriends?
  13. If Christian is a super-busy CEO who doesn't have time for interviews, how does he continually visit (and subsequently, bed) Ana?
  14. What does Christian do anyway?
  15. How can anyone base an entire relationship on having sex?
  16. Why does Ana let hormones rule her reason?
  17. If one does not feel comfortable, why can she not say it with conviction?
  18. Why is Ana forever "scared" in Christian's presence?
  19. How did this book become a bestseller?
  20. Why are Ana and Christian always f**king?
  21. Do Ana and Christian ever talk about anything other than sex?
  22. Does Christian only want Ana's body?
  23. Even if Ana falls in love with Christian, why can't she get over him?
  24. Why is Ana so impractical?
  25. Why does Christian view women as objects?
  26. Why does Ana believe Christian when he calls her "brave", because she didn't cry when he spanked her?
  27. As someone so inexperienced as Ana, how do such passionate sexual thoughts awake in her?
  28. Why does she not admit that she likes Christian?
  29. What is the Inner Goddess and "subconscious" crisis?
  30. Why is Ana so typical?
  31. Why is Christian still chasing Ana to make her his sex-slave, even after she refuses him?
  32. Why does it not creep Ana out that Christian is into BDSM?
  33. Is it always that ease to climax?
  34. Why is it mandatory for Ana to have beautiful skin?
  35. Why does Ana take orders from a complete stranger?
  36. Why is there nothing in the book apart from sex?
  37. Is it advisable to step into a relationship if one is unsure?
  38. Does Ana like being at the receiving end?
  39. Why does she want to let Christian mold her into something she's not?
  40. Why is sex so important?
  41. What was so bad about Jose as a boyfriend?
  42. How can Ana let Christian boss her around with clothes and food and cars and even her own lip?
  43. Why should it be so gratifying to know that a man craves your body, and your body only?
  44. How can Ana allow Christian to take her, whether she wants it or not?
  45. How can anyone like to be taken advantage of?
  46. Is E. L. James into BDSM?
  47. Being a woman herself, how can E. L. James portray her leading lady in such a succumbing, vulnerable pushover?
  48. Why are all the subsidiary characters flat types?
  49. Does Ana have any other shade than a mewling whimpering wuss?
  50. Where are the rest of the shades of Christian Grey?
I'll end this post by saying that, Fifty Shades of Grey may be a bestseller, but it surely is, and will be the worst book I've ever had the misfortune to read. Peace out.

What We All Really Want

More time.

That's what all of us, every one of us want, because beneath all the layers, lack of time is the root of all problems/sadness/confusion/heartache/heartburn.

We wish we had more days of innocent carefree childhood,
more time to write that exam paper,
more time to draw up enough courage,
more time to sleep,
more time to spend with the special person,
more time to read that novel,
more time to consider,
more time to have fun,
more time to prepare that seminar/project,
more time to complete what we started,

more time to LIVE.

P.S. The only hours we want to be short are the 'job' hours.

Things I Want to Do Before I Die

It's difficult to make this list, because a) it is ever expanding and b) I might die even as I write it. But, well, here are some of the things I want to have accomplished before I take the snuff.

  • Lie on a grassy lawn and watch the sky: Believe me or not, I've never done this. I'd like to try it someday. I've been told that it'll be softer than velvet or chenille. It doesn't matter to me whether it is day or night because clouds and stars fascinate me alike, though I'll be just a bit partial to stars.

  • Get a dog: My mother just won't let me keep one now, because apparently there's space-constrain and I'm not capable to take care of it. But I really really really want a dog. Dogs are the best to have around when you're sad and don't want to talk about it. They will just rest with you and probably lick your face if you're crying. I really feel that I don't only want a dog, but I actually need one. One day, I definitely will.

  • Visit the Taj Mahal on a full-moon night: I don't see the Taj as a symbol for eternal love. It is, however, a breathtaking piece of architecture. Somehow it has always fascinated me. I could gaze at it forever and forever and never get bored. And, I've not been to Agra yet. Well, that's why it's on this list!

  • Get a tattoo: This will definitely scandalize a lot of people. My parents. Some of my friends. My boyfriend. But I want one done, on my nape. Two little anime wings, because, some of us are always meant to fly.

  • Get published: Every writer's dream, no matter whether big or small. I haven't yet decided what I'd like to publish. I could be a novel. Or poetry. Or a paper. I don't know yet. I want to get published without paying the publishers, not the other way round.

  • Go to a real rock concert: No, I've never been to one yet. I want to scream my head of and dance like a mad woman. I would wear the band T-shirt and make the rock sign to everyone.

  • Catch a snow-flake on my tongue: I cannot explain why this seem to be so important to me, but it is. I've never seen snow falling. I used to dream about being in snow-land when I was younger. I don't dream about this anymore but I do want to have snow falling around me. I even wrote imaginative pieces on how it would feel like to witness my first snowfall.

  • Have a butterfly sit on my palm: I don't want to catch one. I just want one to sit on my palm. It makes me happy to only think about it. I love butterflies, they're beautiful without knowing it.
